STONE DETAILS
The word coral has a Greek root and is derived from the words “kori-alos”, meaning “daughter of the sea”. It is an organic gemstone and is considered to be a precious stone of the sea. Coral is actually groups of many polyps of marine invertebrates. The polyps live in colonies, side by side, and each polyp that is born incorporates its skeleton into the colony and expands it. This skeleton is formed from Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3). These colonies are also home to some single-celled algae, which photosynthesize, thus providing food for the polyps and secreting some pigments that color the colonies. Coral has a hardness of 3-4 on the Mohs scale and is more commonly found in white, beige, pink and red colors. It forms branching structures in tropical and subtropical oceans, especially in the Mediterranean, as well as near the shores of Japan and China. Corals used in jewelry making are non-living, fossilized skeletons, not living organisms.
