STONE DETAILS
Tiger’s Eye is a type of quartz with a characteristic iridescent glow, which resembles the colors of the tiger’s eye and that is why this stone was given the specific name. Tiger’s eye is a silicate mineral belonging to the group of tectosilicates and the family of quartz with a mobile reflection. What makes this stone special is its characteristic optical phenomenon, known as chatoyancy or the cat’s eye effect. This is essentially a visible band of light moving across the surface of the stone, reminiscent of the slit cat’s eye. This phenomenon results from the reflection and scattering of light by fibrous inclusions present within the stone, often crocidolite fibers. This effect is formed by the gradual replacement of the crocidolite by quartz and other minerals through the process of pseudomorphism. Tiger’s Eye is characterised by a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale and it is primarily sourced from South Africa, India, Australia, Brazil and the USA.
