The name which this mineral bears, originates from the ancient Greek name of the river in Sicily, where agate was first discovered. Agate is a variety of chalcedony, belonging to the family of microcrystalline quartz. It is a silicate mineral with a chemical formula SiO₂   (silicon dioxide) and it belongs to the tectosilicate group. Agate is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale. Generally, there are many varieties of Agate, which come from different places around the world and occur in a wide range of colors. Agate is derived from many different places, including Brazil, the USA, Africa, India, Uruguay, Peru and Mexico.  The black color of the agate is the result of a special enhancement process.
