STONE DETAILS

The word opal comes from the Sanskrit word “upala” which means gemstone. Opal belongs to the quartz family and it is a hydrated silicone oxide. Silica spheres are close packed, producing the internal colors by causing the interference and diffraction of light passing through the microstructure of the opal. This is why opal makes iridescences and this phenomenon is called opalescence. Opal is characterized by the amorphous crystal system and the hardness of 5-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Black Opal derives from Madagascar.
