STONE DETAILS

Ruby:
The name ruby comes from the Latin word for red “ruber”, in reference to the stone’s vivid coloration. Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, composed of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) and its color can range from light pinkish red to deep red, due to the presence of trace amounts of chromium in the crystal structure. Ruby is characterized by the hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale and the hexagonal crystal system. Some of the major sources of the Ruby are Burma, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Thailand, India and Tanzania.

Hematite:
The word Hematite comes from the Greek word “aima” which means blood, because of the red coloring that some varieties of it show when crushed. It is an iron oxide with a chemical composition of Fe₂O₃, which is characterized by the trigonal crystal system and the hardness of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Hematite can be found in various countries, including Brazil, India, the USA, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Russia, Ukraine and China.
