STONE DETAILS

The name Rutile is derived from the Latin word “rutilus” meaning “reddish”, because it can occur in a big variety of colours such as reddish-brown, yellow, golden and black, depending on the different impurities present in the mineral. Rutile is the most common, natural form of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and often forms as thin, needle-shaped crystals that are commonly found as inclusions in other minerals like quartz, garnet, corundum and andalusite. It is characterized by the tetragonal crystal system and the hardness of 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Rutile can be found in many different places around the world, but it derives mainly from India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Madagascar, Ukraine and Australia.
