STONE DETAILS

The name which this mineral bears, originates from the ancient Greek name of the river in Sicily, where agate was first discovered. It is a silicone dioxide belonging to the Quartz family, and is formed by relative layers of chalcedony, in which each layer has different colouring. It is characterized in the trigonal system, and measures 7 on the Mohs scale. Agate may be found in many regions, including Brazil, Italy, Greece, Peru and Mexico.
