Tanzanite was named after Tanzania, the country in which it was first discovered. Tanzanite is a silicate mineral, which contains calcium and aluminum and basically is the blue/violet variety of the mineral zoisite. It is famed for its characteristic colour, which ranges from a vibrant blue to a deep purple-violent. Tanzanite is characterized by the orthorhombic crystal system and the hardness of 6.5-7on the Mohs scale. Tanzanite is derived from Tanzania.
