STONE DETAILS

Obsidian The word Obsidian originates from Roman Obsius, who is accepted as being the one who first discovered and introduced obsidian from Ethiopia. It is solidified lava, rich in aluminium and silicates, which is natural volcanic glass, formed after past volcanic eruptions, and due to the speed of the solidification, there was no crystallisation. Obsidian measure 5.5- 6 on the Mohs scale, and although it is more prevalent in Volcanic regions, examples are also found in countries such as the USA and Mexico. The most common colour is Black and other variations are also possible, including the sought after rainbow, and snowflake, which is more common in Italy and Iceland.

Hematite Hematite comes from the Greek word “aima” which means Blood and it is an Iron Oxide. It is characterized by a hexagonal crystal system and a hardness of 6 on the Mohs scale. Hematite can be found in various countries, including Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand.
