STONE DETAILS

Spinel Spinel takes its name from the Latin word “spina” which means thorn/prickle, due to the barbed pints of its crystals which look like thorns. Spinel is a magnesium oxide, which is characterized by the cubic crystal system and the hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale. Spinel can be found in different countries, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and USA.

Diopside The name Diopside is derived from the Greek words ‘dis’ which means twice and ‘opsi’ which means face. It means double appearance, which refers to the way the crystal’s prism is orientated. Diopside is a silicate mineral in the pyroxene family that occurs in metamorphosed siliceous limestones and dolomites. Its hardness is measured at 7 on the Mohs scale and crystallizes in the monoclinic system. Diopside can be found in various countries, including the USA, Sweden, Canada, Russia, Germany and China.

Obsidian The word Obsidian originates from Roman Obsius, who is accepted as being the one who first discovered and introduced obsidian from Ethiopia. It is solidified lava, rich in aluminum and silicates, which is natural volcanic glass, formed after past volcanic eruptions, and due to the speed of the solidification, there was no crystallization. Obsidian is characterized by the hardness of 5.5- 6 on the Mohs scale, and although it is more prevalent in Volcanic regions, examples are also found in countries such as the USA and Mexico. The most common colour is Black and other variations are also possible, including the sought after rainbow, which is more common in Mexico and snowflake, which is more common in Italy and Iceland.
