Spinel Spinel takes its name from the Latin word “spina” which means thorn/prickle, due to the barbed pints of its crystals which look like thorns. Spinel is a magnesium oxide, whose mass is characterized by cubic formations, and it is a level 8 on the Mohs scale. Spinel can be found in different areas, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and USA.
